Excellence in the Arts Awards

In its opening year (2001), HKM was recognized amongst over a hundred schools statewide for their excellence in Arts, which continues to be a strength of the program today.

Launching of Kanehunamoku

'Opio helped with the birthing of our Polynesian double-hulled sailing canoe, launched in November 2002. `Opio continue to maintain and sail the canoe, as their “floating classroom” for learning math, science, language arts, history and culture.

Academic Improvement

93% of 'Opio showed significant improvement in pre/post test scores for core content areas (Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies), and a 96% attendance rate (well above both State and Native Hawaiian average attendance rates). Both parent and student surveys indicate a significant increase in motivation and the desire to learn and achieve (as evidenced by an average improvement of 1.9 in GPA upon entering HKM). Half received a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Behavior, Values

All students have less behavior related referrals since joining HKM, with drastic reduction in total behavior referrals over the last two years! Self, teacher, and parent assessment shows clear improvements in areas of respect, teamwork, and sense of kuleana to Malama their ‘Aina, Kai, and Kaiaulu (Community)

Annual Ho'ike

Each year, 'Opio display their cultural knowledge learned through the “authentic assessment” demonstrated by two annual concerts (one with Na Lei Na`auao Charter School Alliance).

3rd Annual Mana Maoli Concert

This past August was our 3rd Mana Maoli Concert to fundraise for HKM, and to raise awareness and support of community, culture, and 'aina-based public education in Hawai'i.

Mana Maoli CDs

'Opio collaborated with community members to compose, record, engineer, produce, package, and distribute powerful “inno-native” songs and chants.
