Hālau Kū Māna Public Charter School - Video Production Television Elective Course
The Hālau Kū Māna Public Charter School - Video Production Television elective class created a Paʻi ʻAi piece on PBS Hawaiʻi's Hiki Nō last week. If you missed it itʻs
online now at http://www.pbshawaii.org/hikino/index.php

The piece is only 1min 40sec long because itʻs our first piece. Our piece is 10min 20sec into the episode, but the whole episode is pretty cool--like all the Hiki Nō episodes--so check it out.

'Oiwi TV Story On State Audit
Hālau Kū Māna's Formal Response to Recent Media and Auditor's Findings
Hālau Kū Māna has been recently highlighted in the media and newspapers for its misrepresentation of data. HKM has in no way misreported or misrepresented its academic performance data in the 2009-10 self-evaluation report to the Charter School Review Panel (CSRP) and Charter School Administrative Office (CSAO). HKM recognizes that sound and viable organizations are accountable and transparent, in this spirit, HKM has provided a copy of the information that was provided to the auditor's for its stakeholders and the general public.

RESPONSE TO MEDIA

HKM was compliant with the report format and report guidelines that were provided by the CSRP and CSAO. For the Hawai'i State Assessment, HKM reported its data as a whole-school and compared its performance to the average state scores and the average complex scores for language arts, math and science.

To demonstrate Adequate Yearly Progress, the state reports whether or not the entire school met proficiency or did not meet proficiency. This status is reported at the school level and not by the individual grade level. The auditor's were dissatisfied with the way that HKM reported its whole-school average score and not by its individual grade level scores.

Each statement is backed by data. Again, in no way did HKM misrepresent its data. In fact, HKM continues to make improvements and met adequate yearly progress for the first time in math in the 2010-11 school year. Hālau Kū Māna invites you to check out our campus and our record of achievements.

The excerpt below is the section that the auditor's office represented.

C. Student Performance

Please provide 3 indicators of student achievement including at least one qualitative and one quantitative sample in the form of graphs and/or narrative. Some examples may include HSA, HAPA, Terra Nova and NWEA. Narrative should include information on both strengths of student achievement and areas for improvement concerning student growth. (When documenting HSA scores, proficiency includes both ‘meets’ and ‘exceeds’ combined.)

HSA scores

The chart above depicts HSA scores for 2009-2010 for the areas of reading, math and science. HKM’s reading score is 324, higher than the state average and slightly lower than the complex. Overall, HKM is making steady progress in the language arts program and is consistently raising and/or maintaining adequate HSA scores.

In the area of math, our school scored 282. While the school has met its internal 10% proficiency goal, we are still under proficiency compared to state and complex levels by 9 to 10 points. Math remains our primary area of concern.

Science scores were placed at 271, meaning that we are well below proficiency. Science remains another area of concern.

While HKM is not yet proficient in science and math, the point spread represented in the chart is relatively narrow. Our school is focused on meeting AYP through quality benchmark-driven instruction, targeted intervention, and focused test preparation.

American Savings Bank - Bank for Education Program
Aloha Family, Friends and Supporters!

Wouldn't it be great if Hālau Kū Māna Public Charter School was awarded $10,000 or even better, $50,000? We could purchase computers, teaching supplies, books, musical instruments, athletic equipment or fund project place-based learning and field trips. Well here's some great news - through its Bank for Education program, American Savings Bank (Member FDIC) is looking to award more than $250,000 to Hawai'i schools!

Here's how the Bank for Education program works:
- From September 26 through December 15, 2011, Hālau Kū Māna Public Charter School will receive up to $30 for each qualified account* opened at American Savings Bank when the account holder designates our school.
- Plus, American Savings Bank will award $10,000 to the school receiving the most qualified designations in each of the four counties (Hawai'i County, City & County of Honolulu, Kaua'i County and Maui County).
- And, three schools will receive an award of $50,000 each. Schools will be categorized according to their enrollment numbers. Awards will go to the school receiving the most qualified designations in their group (student enrollment categories 1-300; 301-550; 551+).

For more information about the Bank for Education program from American Savings Bank, including the accounts and transactions that qualify for designations, call 627-6900 (O'ahu) or 800-272-2566 (Neighbor Islands and Mainland), or visit www.asbhawaii.com/Bank_for_Education. To open your account, visit any American Savings Bank branch...and remember to designate Hālau Kū Māna Public Charter School.

We're so excited to have this opportunity to generate some much needed funds for our school through the Bank for Education program. So, please help spread the word to your family and friends!

Student's Senior Project is making a difference in the lives of others
On Wednesday, December 07, 2011, Lensia Glover, a senior at Hālau Kū Māna Charter School, dropped off 7 huge boxes of clothing from a clothing drive she organized especially for the homeless keiki and families of the Ka Pa‘alana Traveling Preschool and Homeless Education Program.

Lensia contacted Ka Pa‘alana in August and has been working steadily to design her donation drive project. She has gone above and beyond with this project as she is doing not one, but four donation drives for the preschool. In November, she collected clothing of all sizes. In December, she is focusing her efforts on gathering canned food and toys. In the new year, she will be collecting school supplies and books for the first month and baby items for the second month.

Ka Pa‘alana would like to thank Lensia and her family for their support and dedication of gathering the much needed items for our struggling keiki and families.
