Eighth Grade English Language Arts is about being prepared for High School; learning the basics in order to move forward throughout education and beyond. Our focus will coincide with HKM’s Quarterly Themes. In quarter one, students will focus on their identity, or sense of self. For quarter two, they will focus on their world, or sense place. Quarter three will steer students to look beyond their lives to the rest of the world to develop a sense of community, and quarter four will bring the world home with their sense of the future and sustainability. We will work on Reading, Writing, and Oral skills to effectively communicate in the ever changing world around them. Students explore and experience both the unity and diversity of language - how language differs, yet enables people to share personal and common belief. The study of literature includes a wide variety of works that contribute to an understanding of our common culture and the culture of others, and that reflect the universal themes uniting all cultures. This course will offer a multitude of different learning opportunities and assessment choices, and be geared toward the individual progress of each student. Course Objectives: • Understand the purpose, function, meaning-making, social/cultural understandings, and symbolic form of language. • Be exposed to different forms of language and writing (poetry, fiction, non-fiction, plays, etc.) • Develop a deeper understanding of contextual material, and develop individual ideas and opinions about literature. • Develop vocabulary, oral, and writing abilities in different forms (essays, presentations, recitation, narratives, etc.). **Students will be keeping an assignment log in their Logbooks (Composition book). Click on "Show Class Links" below and then on "Assignment Log" to see what the log should contain. Some assignments will be in the logbook, some in the student's binder/folder, and others are oral or reminders.
