Credits for Kua’ana and Graduation Requirements

HKM has a 25-credit system for students at the Kua‟ana level. Four credits in each of the following subjects are required to graduate: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies (Mo‟olelo), and Hawaiian Language. „Ohana should understand in advance that this exceeds the number required by the mainstream DOE public schools. We believe that high standards and expectations are important for the long-term success of our „ōpio.

All Kua’ana and their ‘ohana will participate in a yearly credit check to assure good progress toward graduation.

Upon successful completion of the required coursework, students enrolled in grades 9 - 12 will receive four credits in the core academic subjects per year for their hui‟s interdisciplinary project. In order to receive the listed number of credits for the content areas listed below, students must complete sets of “coursework” for each content area utilizing rubrics developed by the teaching team with input from learners.

The remainders of the six possible credits are earned through their Hawaiian language, hula, and elective courses. A student‟s senior project will warrant one additional credit.

While Kaikaina earn grades and credits, their middle school transcripts are separate from the 25-credit system for graduation. Below is the credit system for Kua‟ana.
