Halau Ku Mana

Aloha to all supporters of community-based schools of choice!

At Hālau Kū Māna, our learning ‘ohana, Mana Maoli, holds our students to high levels of academic excellence and Hawaiian values, regardless of their starting points. As a result, across the board, our students have shown remarkable improvements in the ABC's of Hālau Kū Māna - Academics, Behavior, and Culture.

Because HKM provides an educational program that addresses multiple learning styles and allows students to pursue their interests, students want to come to school and learn! They see the “real world” value in their projects. They are proud of their achievements, the things they are contributing to their communities, and the perpetuation of Hawaiian culture. This is evident in the dramatic improvement in their attendance rates, attitudes toward learning, and in the quality of their work.

Most importantly, parents and students alike are happier and more satisfied at HKM - they see our school as an 'ohana. Parents and families contribute daily to various aspects of the school. Such involvement directly contributes to strengthening our families and communities.

Since Hālau Kū Māna was founded, thousands of hours of volunteer work and in-kind services have made it possible for our school and our students to achieve far beyond anyone's expectations.

I am asking you to give what you can to our 'ohana here at Hālau Kū Māna Public Charter School. I ask because, while we know and utilize the resources within our own family, we have needs that go beyond our current capacity. As you may know, despite original law calling for equity in funding and services, charter schools receive just over half of what already under-funded mainstream schools receive for operations. Services not provided include food service, transportation, counseling, and health aide. In addition, we receive no State assistance with facilities. With no long-term home, facilities issues remain our biggest challenge.

Our continued success is not possible without the kōkua of both partner organizations and individuals in the community like you. We ask for your kōkua with what you can most afford to give - whether it be time, money, equipment, or supplies. We need kōkua in the classroom, in our office, on our canoe, and with site clean-up and renovations. Monetary donations can be earmarked toward one of our top funding needs – facilities, staff salaries, food service, or transportation. We also would really appreciate donations of supplies and equipment for our office, classroom, canoe, or lo'i project.

Regardless of how you kōkua, we urge you to come visit, and you will see firsthand the value of what you are giving! E 'olu'olu 'oe, invest in success, invest in pono, and invest in the future leaders of our communities. Your return will be quite satisfying!

E kū i ka māna kākou,

Keola Nakanishi
