Appointment of Dr. Brandon Keoni Bunag to HKM Head of School

Appointment of Dr. Brandon Keoni Bunag to HKM Head of School Aloha e na hoa makamaka a puni na kai ewalu,

Over the past five years, Halau Ku Mana has realized tremendous organizational, financial and programmatic gains and improvements. For example, HKM has earned six year WASC accreditation, achieved a 100% college acceptance rate for three consecutive years, maintained strong and clean financial audits, completed major facility renovations, increased enrollment by 103% since 2010-11 and maintains a substantial waiting list, and has been awarded a DOE STRIVE HI award for growth and achievement. This was not always the norm for HKM. The school community has attributed the change to: clear goals and expectations, consistent school culture, alignment of state standards with Hawaiian cultural standards, and strong leadership.

Mahina Duarte, Poo Kumu has served as HKM’s school leader since 2010 and has recently accepted a position with Kanu o ka ‘Aina PCS as its new incoming Poo Kumu for the secondary program. While HKM is sad to see Poo Kumu Mahina go, we are 100% supportive of her professional and personal endeavors and only wish her and her ‘ohana the best.

To guide HKM into the next era of learning and program excellence, the School Board has selected Dr. Brandon Keoni Bunag as its new incoming Poo Kumu. Poo Kumu Keoni comes to the school with a plethora of experience and skills, including an Doctorate of Education (Ed.D) from the University of Southern California and previous management experience with Kamehameha Schools as Director of Operations and Assistant Director of the Enrichment Department for the Extension Education Division. He has experience in developing and delivering Hawaiian culture-based educational programming for middle and high school students, program evaluation and data collection, analysis and reporting. Poo Kumu also serves as a lecturer in Hawaiian Studies with Leeward Community College. He is an avid advocate of Hawaiian language immersion programs as a parent of two, whose children attend Ke Kula ‘o S.M. Kamakau and Punana Leo o Manoa. Of greatest relevance, Poo Kumu Keoni served on HKM’s school governance board for five years.

Please join me in welcoming Poo Kumu Keoni to our learning 'ohana.

Kama'aina Kids A+ Program SY 14-15
August 5, 2014

Aloha Parents,

We would like to ask your help. To keep our afterschool program based here at Hālau Kū Māna, we need to service at least 20 students. You can help by registering your keiki grades 4 – 6, for program. If you qualify for our subsidized tuition program you pay nothing out of pocket and are not obligated to attend all day or every day. If keiki attend just 10 minutes a day or at least once a week, you qualify.

What our program can offer you is a safe place for your keiki to study and receive homework help, staff certified in first aid, CPR, life guarding, has received hundreds of hours of training in proper childcare policies. In addition we practice mindfulness and encourage the same in our keiki. Daily activities may include: arts and crafts, music and dance, sports and organized games.

We have registration forms on site or you can visit our web page at kamaainakids.com. If you have any questions please call Jacque Shin at 478-3243 or see Cortnee Von Roufs on campus daily from 1:30pm – 5:30pm. Thank you for your consideration on this matter.

In Service to Hālau Kū Māna,

Jacque Shin
