Job Summary:
Hālau Kū Māna kumu are responsible for planning and conducting appropriate instruction in order to achieve identified objectives of the subject area or grade level. Instructional activities should take into strong consideration student differences and needs and employ a variety of methods that are consistent with Hālau Kū Māna’s Vision and Mission and further advances Indigenous Education. All kumu are also expected to actively collaborate on various school-wide committees and initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Classroom Instruction

Plan, conduct and evaluate classroom instruction in a manner that achieves identified objectives of the course.

Develop a method to assess student performance and monitor progress.
-
Incorporate and/or develop new teaching methods that address the changing needs of students.
-
Promote a positive learning environment.
-
Utilize methods that are consistent with the School’s Vision and Mission.
Aloha ʻĀina Education (AAE)
-
Plan, conduct and evaluate (on and off campus) learning experiences that are in alignment with HKM’s PBI Model.
-
Where applicable, engage with community collaborators in the planning, development and implementation of unique place-based, practitioner specific ʻike, in alignment with HKM’s PBI Model.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Communication
-
Maintain open communication with the entire learning ʻohana (students, teachers, administrators, parents, families).

Clearly articulate student expectations.
-
Create and maintain good rapport with students, ohana and colleagues.
Administrative
-
Fulfill administrative requirements as required by school administrators and school policy, including maintaining and submitting required student records, completing and submitting administrative forms, attending and participating in staff/faculty meetings.

On occasion and when necessary, provide supervisory duties for non-instruction related activities.
Professional Development
-
Create and complete professional development plans with both long and short-term goals that relate to teaching responsibilities.
Collaborative & Active Member of the Hālau Kū Māna Community

Actively participate and promote use of the Hawaiian language.

Participate in staff meetings, in-service sessions and other instructional training workshops as needed.

Manage special projects as assigned.
-
Embrace and uphold the responsibility of Hālau Kū Māna's ʻAe Like and vision and mission; to Hoʻokumu (build grounding and foundation); Hoʻokele (forge direction and connections) and Hoʻomāna (provide sustenance and empowerment.
Job Requirements: (Education or experience required to perform this job. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed below)

Bachelor’s Degree in Education or closely related field primary to institution
Preferred Requirements: (Education and/or experience that would enhance the performance of this job)

5 years of related work experience
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: (Indicate critical, required knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the job duties; these should be directly related to the jobʻs core duties)

Knowledge and application of instructional methods that are grounded in Hawaiian cultural perspectives/worldview.

Thorough knowledge of the subject area and the ability to develop appropriate curriculum.

Familiarity with Project-Based Learning Strategies.

Ability to differentiate instruction.

Ability to manage classroom environments (small and large groups).

Communicate effectively with students, parents, counselor, and school administrators.

Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to develop and deliver interdisciplinary curriculum.

Highly qualified Teacher Designation

Ability to obtain State of Hawaiʻi Bus Driver certification.*

CPR and AED trained.
Pay Range:
-
Teacherʻs salary and benefits are determined by the most recent collective bargaining agreement between the Department of Education and the Hawaiʻi State Teachers Association.
Physical Requirements:

Frequently sits, performs desk-based computer tasks, and grasps light or fine manipulation, talk, or hear.

Frequently stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

Rarely twist, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, reach, or work above shoulder, or grasp forcefully.

Able to participate in school wide cultural activities that may involve hiking and working in various ʻāina based locations.
Working Conditions:

Work is typically conducted in a classroom environment and may require work to be conducted in non-standard workplaces.

Regular weekly cultural activities and occasional school wide cultural activities may occur outdoors.
-
Work is typically conducted Monday through Friday at normal business hours.
* HKM utilizes 14-passenger school buses to transport students to/from campus to various learning sites.
These learning sites are critical components in implementing the school’s Aloha ʻĀina Education (AAE) program. All teachers assigned to a project will need to seek Hawaiʻi School Bus Driver Certification; other Hālau Kū Māna faculty and staff Hawaiʻi School Bus Driver Certification is preferred.
